On February 22, 2001, the Puerto Rico Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation celebrated its 10th anniversary. Over 200 STEM faculty members from the different PR-LSAMP institutions participated in this event, which took place at the Ponce Hilton Hotel. The Plenary Conference was offered by Dr. Neil F. Comins, professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Maine. Dr. Comins is nationally recognized for his book “Heavenly Errors”. The topic of the conference was “Addressing Misconceptions in the Classroom: Helping Students Identify Their Beliefs and Then Truly Changing Them”. A local panel of university faculty members shared with the audience their experience in addressing science misconceptions at the K-12 level, and in undergraduate Biology, Chemistry and Physics courses.
