The PR-LSAMP Student Tracking System

In the Year 2000, PR-LSAMP developed and pilot-tested a Student Tracking System to gather information on the STEM baccalaureate degree graduates from PR-LSAMP institutions.  Specifically, we wanted to know:

  • The PR-LSAMP institution they graduated from

  • The BS field they majored in

  • Year in which they received their BS degree

  • In which PR-LSAMP activities they participated

  • If they enrolled in graduate school:

  • The name of Institution

  • Field of study

  • Degree they are pursuing (MS or PhD)

  • When they expect to graduate (year)

  • If they opted for employment after their undergraduate education:

  • If the job they hold is related to their field of studies

  • If they stayed in Puerto Rico or moved to the mainland or foreign country

  • If they are working in the public or private sector (specify agency)

  • If they are planning to stay in that job or is it temporary

  • If they are planning to pursue graduate studies in the future, and if so, to indicate the future field of studies and if the selected field is different from their BS major

The questionnaire was pilot-tested at three PR-LSAMP institutions and was mailed to the population of BS SMET graduates for the years 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998.  Because of the difficulty in getting responses from students that left the Island for the U.S. Mainland, the results are skewed toward those that remained in the Island.  The aggregate results of the 960 respondents showed that:

  • 54.6% of the BS graduates for those years enrolled in graduate school.  Of those that enrolled in graduate school, 29.8% are pursuing graduate studies in a science field; 0.7% in mathematics; 8.8% in Engineering, and 15.6% in a non-SMET field

  • 45.2% of those that opted for a job upon obtaining their BS degree, secured employment in their fields of studies.  Of those currently working, 53.6% plan to pursue graduate studies in the future

  • 46.7% of the respondents are considering obtaining a teacher certification in science or math

The questionnaire is now available electronically, both in Spanish and English.
