Cooperative Learning

Cooperative learning has proven a successful teaching and learning strategy to enhance student academic performance.  Faculty members from PR-LSAMP institutions have been trained in the use of this strategy, where students are divided into small teams and use a variety of learning activities to master concepts taught in the course.  Students are not only responsible for their own learning but also for helping other students in the team understand what is taught.  This strategy promotes the creation of learning communities.  It has been shown that cooperative learning improves not only academic achievement, but also develops in students the ability to work in groups, increases self-confidence and motivation.

Results of a study conducted by four professors from UPR-Mayaguez and a graduate student, showed “that cooperative learning in PR-LSAMP institutions signals the beginning of a paradigm shift in the island’s educational system”. The study was published in the 2001 July issue of the Journal of Engineering Education.  Based on the results of the study, a group of STEM professors was trained to assist their colleagues in mastering this teaching and learning strategy.
