The Chem-2-Chem Program

The University of Puerto Rico Cayey Campus designed and implemented a program called Chem-2-Chem to provide a supportive learning environment for students in the General Chemistry course. In addition to providing academic assistance, Chem-2-Chem develops students’ self-confidence and positive study attitudes necessary to successfully complete the course requirements. Academic tutoring and personal mentoring are provided by upper level students to students enrolled in the General Chemistry course. Chem-2-Chem can serve as a useful model program for other gatekeeper courses at large and small institutions. It can be used to change student perception that Chemistry is unapproachable and break the psychological barriers that make students avoid science careers.
